Men's Vibram FiveFingers V-RUN

Oyster (2017)

BRAND NEW COLOUR FOR 2017: The original Bikila, named after the famous barefoot Olympic runner Adebe Bikila, was released in 2010. Designed mainly for road use, the Bikila was a huge success and was soon followed by the Bikila LS (the same shoe, but with a lace system). In 2014, the shoe ‘evolved’ in to the Bikila Evo to massive acclaim, and 2016 sees the release of the Bikila Evo 2 (now V-RUN).

Feetus.co.uk recommends the V-RUN for the following activities:

  • Running (Road, treadmill)
  • Racing
  • Gym Use
  • Indoor Training

V-RUN Description

The V-RUN still remains incredibly light, and features 4mm of EVA in the midsole making it ideal for those new to minimalist running, or those that like a middle ground between max ground feel and a degree of cushioning.

Medium distance running in a minimalist shoe can be challenging for new minimalist users. It takes time for your foot to adjust to an increasingly thinner level of sole. The V-RUN is a fully redesigned shoe built for those looking for a shoe that provides the benefits of going barefoot and that has slightly more cushion to offer more comfort on a medium distance road run. The sole is still thin, and provides a bit more underfoot to ensure confidence while making the switch.

Machine washable. Air dry.

Fit/Size

I've only worn them once, as yet, but I must say they're enjoyable to run in. So much so that if you're new to Fivefingers it's easy to exceed the recommended running distance for beginners. Advice worth heeding. This I learnt from experience having had a pair previously (of doubtful authenticity and from less reputable retailer, I might add, as they lasted only 28 miles before splitting) and found myself happily running 8 miles on only my second wear. I'll be taking it slower this time, although once you put on your regular trainers, you realise how unnatural they feel.

The service from FEETUS was very good, dispatched the same day and arriving just a couple days later. The guys at FEETUS probably won't remember this but I emailed them about a year ago, not long after the debacle with the fake shoes I bought elsewhere. They were very helpful, despite having never purchased from them.

The price is one of the main reasons it's taken me so long to invest in a second pair, but it's worth paying more for the peace of mind. The knowledge that the product you've bought is genuine and that the retailer is willing to help in the eventuality of a problem, is priceless.

What do you think this product is best for (ie trail running, road running, gym, beginners, advanced)?
Road running
What are the pros of this product?
The shoes are lightweight and the lack of conventional cushioning ensures you're fleet footed. All of this while providing adequate protection against stones and the abrasiveness of the pavement surface.
What are the cons of this product?
Too early to say. But my only worry would be the durability of the upper.
Does the product come up large/small/true to size?
True to size.

Fit/Size

My second run in these saw them both rub large areas of skin from the backs of my heels after about 5 miles. I own Spyridon MRs and Trek Ascents and both these are nicely finished at the back and do not cause problems even on runs of over 13 miles. The V-RUNs however have exposed stitching and material edges right where they contact the back of the heel. This causes excessive and painful rubbing and I now have two large sores on my heels. Why would you design a shoe like this? Maybe if worn with socks this would not happen but many people will want to wear these without socks. That aside they are very comfortable but just think carefully about how you will use them before buying and if another model might be better. I hope future versions are improved...

What do you think this product is best for (ie trail running, road running, gym, beginners, advanced)?
Best for road running or dry, non-rocky trails.
What are the pros of this product?
Lightweight, ventilated, comfy.
What are the cons of this product?
Horrendous design at the rear of the heel causes injury, bleeding, skin loss and pain after a few miles when worn without socks.
Does the product come up large/small/true to size?
Fit is good.
